Meagan King

Dr. Meagan King serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Currently on leave but actively engaged in research, she focuses on integrating animal production science with compassion and technology to advance farm animal welfare and farmer well-being.

Her educational background includes:

• PhD in Animal Health, Welfare and Behaviour from the University of Guelph
• MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Guelph
• BSc Honours in Environmental Biology from Queen's University

King's research program addresses critical intersections of animal agriculture and human welfare. She investigates housing and management systems that optimize animal health while reducing harmful behaviors, develops precision agriculture applications for illness detection using big data and machine learning, and designs low-cost welfare interventions. Concurrently, she examines farmer mental health through projects analyzing stress correlations with barn design, automation, and animal welfare outcomes—highlighting how agricultural technologies impact occupational well-being. Her work bridges scientific rigor with practical solutions for sustainable livestock production.

As an educator, she teaches ANSC 3530 (The Animal and Its Environment), ANSC 4510 (Domesticated Animal Behaviour), and ANSC 7510 (Special Topics in Animal Health and Physiology). Her research group explores farmer stress factors across dairy and beef operations while developing enrichment strategies for piglets and welfare protocols for northern dogs and barn cats.
