Irwin McLean is a distinguished academic with roles including Schwartz Professor of Genetic Medicine at the PC Project (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) and Emeritus Professor of Genetic Medicine at the University of Dundee's School of Life Sciences. He holds Honorary Consultant Clinical Scientist positions in Dermatology and Human Genetics with NHS Tayside. His career spans over three decades, including leadership roles at the University of Dundee and Jefferson Medical College.
Education: BSc (Hons) Microbiology (1985), PhD Human Genetics (1988), DSc Human Genetics (keratinizing disorders) – all from The Queen's University of Belfast.
Research Interests: McLean's work focuses on human molecular genetics, particularly keratin-related disorders and filaggrin's role in skin barrier function. His breakthrough discovery of filaggrin's link to atopic dermatitis has revolutionized understanding of allergic disease mechanisms. Current efforts emphasize translational therapies for epidermal and corneal disorders.
