Maysa Falah is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth. She holds a DPhil in Pharmacology from the University of Oxford and a specialization in Epidemiology/Public Health from Imperial College London. Her roles include leading Pathology education in the BMBS programme, coordinating Foundation Year Programmes across 15 healthcare disciplines, and supervising MSc dissertations in Global Health/Clinical Education.
Her academic journey includes postdoctoral research on neurodegenerative disorders at Oxford’s Platt Lab (collaborating with Orphazyme) and industry-focused pharmacology teaching. Research interests span two core areas: (1) epidemiology of substandard/falsified medicines in LMICs and disaster zones, focusing on antibiotic quality and antimicrobial resistance; and (2) neuropharmacological interventions targeting lysosomal dysfunction and hippocampal sclerosis mechanisms.
Recent publications explore pesticide toxicity profiles (encyclopedia entries on cypermethrin/deltamethrin/pyrethroids) and neuroprotective strategies using heat-shock protein pathways in NPC1 mouse models. Current projects investigate medication quality in post-earthquake Morocco (as PI for three active grants) and public awareness of poor-quality medicines in Jordan.
- Supervised students: Dr Rehab Osman (semaglutide efficacy), Dr Eman Mohammedi (essential oils in dermatology), Dr Kat Gangly (drug stability in extreme environments)
- Key initiatives: Adapted WHO medicine quality guidelines for disaster settings, pioneered team-based learning pedagogy in medical education
- Global Health Impact: Contributions to UN SDGs 3 (Good Health) and 17 (Partnerships)
