Maya Sypert is a Professor of Music and Associate Department Chair at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she also serves as Undergraduate Studies Chair. She holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University, a Master of Music from Westminster Choir College, and a Bachelor of Music from Binghamton University with a minor in Italian Language and Literature. Her research focuses on vocal performance, Latin American art song repertoire, and music pedagogy.
She is renowned for her operatic roles such as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and Mercédès in Carmen, as well as collaborations with pianist José Meléndez in recitals emphasizing lesser-known Latin American works. Her book on Latin American art songs (Indiana University Press, 2010) remains a seminal resource in the field. She regularly performs with orchestras like the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and international festivals in Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia.
Her academic contributions include publications in Classical Singer, Choral Journal, and Philosophy of Music Education Review. She maintains active engagement in community outreach through Artists for Social Justice Hawai‘i and continues to teach voice performance and music education at UH Mānoa.
