Maximilian T. Schuster

Dr. Maximilian T. Schuster is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. He serves as associate chair, coordinates the Master of Education in Higher Education program, and maintains an affiliation with the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies program. He also co-founded the Education, Leadership, and Social Change Living Learning Community in Irvis Hall.

His research focuses on the lived experiences of college students with minoritized identities, particularly exploring how organizational culture, campus climate, and identity development frameworks shape their educational journeys. He specializes in qualitative methodologies and critical data analysis, with a strong emphasis on LGBTQ+ students and those navigating intersecting marginalized identities. Recent publications analyze graduate student-faculty collaboration, student development theory application, and identity-affirming practices in residence life.

Dr. Schuster's advising work includes mentoring Rachel Stalker, co-author of the 2022 ACUHO-I award-winning article on resident assistants with minoritized identities. He has secured grants from ACPA and ACUHO-I to study political engagement and identity-affirming microclimates. His teaching integrates contemplative pedagogies to foster equity-driven leadership in higher education.
