Maximilian Fichtner

Maximilian Fichtner is a Research Unit Chair and Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), leading the Energy Storage Systems group. He also serves as Spokesman of the Cluster of Excellence POLiS and Scientific Director of CELEST (Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm-Karlsruhe).

Research Focus: Development of nanostructured materials for energy applications, including beyond-lithium battery chemistries (e.g., Mg and Ca batteries), reactive nanocomposites for Li-ion batteries, and 3D structuring of energy storage systems. His work emphasizes mechanical/chemical synthesis methods, thermodynamics/kinetics of nanocomposites, and size effects in nanoconfined materials.

Leadership & Collaborations: He leads a multidisciplinary team of 25 researchers at KIT/HIU and participates in European initiatives like BATTERY2030+. He has coordinated EU-RTD projects and co-chaired Gordon Research Conferences.

Media & Outreach: His work has been featured in TV reports (e.g., ProSieben Galileo, 3SAT Nano) and international symposiums.
