Max Woodworth is an Associate Professor at The Ohio State University's Department of Geography, affiliated with the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. His work focuses on urbanization dynamics in East Asia, particularly in China and Taiwan, with expertise in energy geography, political economy, and resource frontiers. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley (2013), an M.A. in Asian Studies from UC Berkeley (2007), and a B.S. in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University (1998).
His research explores urban transformation in East Asia through studies of new towns, military dependents villages in Taiwan, and resource-driven urbanization. Notable projects include analyses of 'ghost cities' in China and the geopolitical implications of urban development under initiatives like the Belt and Road. He teaches courses on urban China, human geography, and development studies.
Woodworth emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to urban studies, combining fieldwork methodologies with critical analysis of urban policies and speculative urbanization trends. His publications span journals like Dialogues in Human Geography and Urban Geography, addressing topics ranging from urban ruination to the political economy of energy frontiers.
