Maurizio Forte is a Professor in the Departments of Classical Studies and Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds the William and Sue Gross Distinguished Professorship and serves as an AAAS-SPTF Fellow advising the U.S. State Department on cultural heritage and neurodiplomacy. His academic career includes roles as Director of Graduate Studies and Core Faculty in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Forte earned his PhD from La Sapienza University of Rome (1993).
His research focuses on digital archaeology, neuroaesthetics, and the application of AI to cultural heritage. Key projects include the Vulci 3000 initiative, combining advanced technologies (e.g., LIDAR, VR) with archaeological excavation to study Etruscan and Roman urban landscapes. He also explores generative AI’s role in reconstructing historical multiverses and neurophysiological responses to art.
Forte’s grants include funding from the Fondazione Luigi Rovati and Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. He teaches courses on Etruscan civilization, virtual museums, and digital archaeology, and leads Bass Connections projects on neuroarchaeology and smart technologies in archaeology. His work is supported by labs like the Dig@Lab at Duke and global collaborations in Italy, Turkey, France, and beyond.
Awarded the Bass Chair for teaching excellence and the Thomas Langford Lectureship, Forte’s outreach includes exhibitions, public talks, and interdisciplinary workshops. His contributions bridge humanities, technology, and science, redefining how we study and preserve cultural heritage.
