Mauricio Palma-Gutierrez is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Warwick's School of Politics and International Studies (PAIS). Currently serving as Research Assistant for the ESRC-funded 'Data Literacies in Displacement' project under Prof. Vicki Squire, he completed his PhD in 2024 on Venezuelan migratory journeys. His academic roles include co-director of the Latin America at Warwick Network (LAWN) and convenor of the Borders, Race, Ethnicity, and Migration Network (BREM).
Palma-Gutierrez holds a unique interdisciplinary background with teaching roles spanning both the University of Warwick and Del Rosario University in Colombia, where he has been a lecturer in International Migration since 2013. His doctoral studies included an MSc from the London School of Economics and an MA from the University of Leipzig.
His research focuses on human mobility across the Americas, critical border studies, and displacement dynamics. Notable contributions include analyzing Venezuelan migrants' experiences during the pandemic and Colombia's migration policies. His work bridges academic research with policy engagement through roles like student tutor at Warwick's Social Mobility Hub and research assistant at WICID.
Palma-Gutierrez has contributed to over 20 publications since 2014, addressing topics from transnational crime financing to EU migration discourse. His recent work emphasizes the intersection of pandemic impacts on border management and migrant agency in displacement contexts.
