Maurice Manning is a Professor of Creative Writing and English at Transylvania University. He holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama (1999), an M.A. in English from the University of Kentucky (1996), and a B.A. in English from Earlham College (1988). His research focuses on poetry composition, literary devices, and American literary traditions. He is best known for his poetry collections like The Common Man (2011 Pulitzer finalist) and Lawrence Booth’s Book of Visions (2000 Yale Series winner).
Manning emphasizes teaching students to analyze literary techniques such as similes and imagery. His work has appeared in prestigious journals including The New Yorker, Southern Review, and Virginia Quarterly Review. Beyond academia, he has judged the National Book Award poetry prize (2012) and contributed an op-ed to The New York Times titled My Old Kentucky Conservatism (2012).
He actively participates in literary communities through roles like regular instructor at the Appalachian Writers Workshop and faculty at Warren Wilson College’s M.F.A. program. His awards reflect decades of impactful contributions to poetry and literary education.
