Joseph Bathanti is a Professor of English and McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University, affiliated with the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies and Appalachian Studies. He joined the faculty in 2001 and serves as Writer-in-Residence at Watauga Residential College. His roles include teaching, creative writing, and interdisciplinary research.

Research & Interests: Bathanti is a prolific writer across poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. His work explores themes of identity, memory, spirituality, and social justice. He co-founded the Creative Writing Program at the Charles George VA Medical Center and has been North Carolina’s Poet Laureate (2012–2014). His interdisciplinary approach bridges literature, peace studies, and Appalachian culture.
