Maureen M Bain is a Professor of Comparative Anatomy and Histology at the University of Glasgow's Department of Physiology, Ageing & Welfare, and serves as Assistant Vice-Principal (Curriculum) in the Office of the Vice Principals. Her research focuses on reproductive biology, eggshell quality, evolutionary development, and animal welfare, with a strong emphasis on avian systems. She leads interdisciplinary projects on eggshell matrix proteins, cuticle deposition, and the genetic basis of reproductive modes in lizards and birds.
Key research groups include Physiology, Ageing & Welfare, Evolution & Diversity, and Educational Research & Scholarship. Her work spans from molecular mechanisms of eggshell formation to applied studies on poultry health and welfare. Notable grants include projects funded by NERC, BBSRC, and EU frameworks addressing egg biosecurity, live-birth evolution, and avian immune responses.
Publications highlight breakthroughs in oviduct cell culture models, biomarker discovery for immune challenges, and proteomic analyses of muscle development. She has received grants totaling over £5M, including a current NERC project on sex-specific fitness landscapes in reproductive mode evolution. Her educational contributions include curriculum development and keynote talks on student transition strategies in veterinary education.
