Maureen Kihika is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed in Sociology and Anthropology and Labour Studies at Simon Fraser University. As a race and labour scholar, her research examines how categories of social difference shape experiences and identities of racialized Black workers and their communities.
Education includes a PhD in Sociology from Simon Fraser University, MA in Social Justice and Equity Studies from Brock University, and BA Hons in Law from Carleton University.
Research investigates socio-economic inequalities faced by Black Canadians within capitalist transnational society, exploring community navigation strategies against systemic marginalization. Current work analyzes how global anti-racism movements (e.g., Black Lives Matter) influence identity formation among Generation Y Black Canadian labour force participants. Research contributes to understanding racialized labour experiences within global economic structures.
Teaching includes courses on gender relations and unfree labour systems. Knowledge mobilization includes contributions to the Canadian Review of Sociology symposium on African-Canadians and anti-Black racism.
