Maureen Cross is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Conservation at The Courtauld Institute of Art. She holds a joint BA in Sociology/Economics from Michigan State University, an Art History BA from Hunter College, and an MA in Easel Paintings Conservation from the University of Northumbria (UK). Her career spans roles at the Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate, and National Museums Liverpool, with expertise in modern/contemporary art conservation and technical analysis.
Her research focuses on materials science in art conservation, including metal soap degradation in 19th-century paintings, spectral imaging of Impressionist works, and innovative treatments for acrylic paintings. Notable projects include analyzing Goya’s materials at the Courtauld and pioneering agar gel solutions for water-damaged canvases.
Publications span 20+ peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, emphasizing cross-disciplinary approaches to conservation science. She has presented globally at conferences like ICOM-CC and the Getty Conservation Institute, advocating for evidence-based conservation practices.
