Maura Keefe is a Professor and Smith Chair of Dance in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland. She holds a Ph.D. in Dance History and Theory from the University of California, Riverside; an M.F.A. in Choreography and Performance from Smith College; and a B.A. in Dance and English from William Smith College. Her research focuses on contemporary dance history, choreography, audience engagement, and intersections between dance and sports. She has served as director of the School from 2020 to 2024 and previously as associate director since 2016.
Keefe is a scholar-in-residence at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, where she engages with global artists through writing, lectures, and interviews. Her work includes lectures at Princeton University, UCLA, the Kennedy Center, and international venues like Mexico’s Festival Internacional Danza Extremadura. Key research interests include dance writing, theories of performance, and athletic-coding in masculine dance aesthetics.
