Prof. Dr. Mattias Kumm is a Research Professor in Global Constitutionalism at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, a Professor at Humboldt University Berlin, and the Inge Rennert Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. His work bridges European Law, International Law, and Comparative Constitutional Law, with a focus on Global Constitutionalism, Democracy, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law.

His research explores the legal structure of markets, constitutional authority, and institutional design in a globalized world. Recent publications analyze constitutional resilience in authoritarian contexts, proportionality in human rights, and constitutional challenges in the European Union. He co-edited Global Canons in an Age of Contestation (2024) and authored key works on academic freedom and cosmopolitan constitutionalism.
Notable scientific awards include the Emile Noelle Fellow (1998) and Ethics Fellow at Kennedy School (1999/2000). He has held visiting roles at Yale, Harvard, Singapore, and the European University Institute. His academic career spans tenure at NYU (since 2006) and leadership as Managing Head of the Center for Global Constitutionalism (2012-2021).
His 15 most recent articles (2009-2024) examine themes such as constitutional pluralism, judicial independence, and democratic legitimacy in global governance. These works intersect with political theory, human rights, and economic law, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to modern constitutional challenges.
