Mattias Folkesson is a University Lecturer at Örebro University's Department of Health Sciences within the School of Health Sciences. He holds a PhD in Sports Science with a focus on physiology/medicine. His research emphasizes adaptations linked to diet and exercise at functional, cellular, and molecular levels, along with physical activity's role in disease prevention and treatment. He teaches courses in sports coaching, physical education, and sport science, focusing on sports physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and training principles.
Educational Background: Doctoral degree in Sports Science (2018), specializing in physiology/medicine. Prior teaching roles in mathematics and physics, reflecting his interdisciplinary expertise.
Research Interests: His work explores the interplay between nutrition and exercise on human physiology, particularly in aging populations and disease contexts. Current projects include the FYPO study on exercise in mental illness and EVL initiatives promoting elite sports-study integration. Past projects addressed facioscapulohumeral dystrophy therapy and dietary strategies for healthy aging.
Research Groups & Collaborations: Active member of the Exercise Physiology and Sport Medicine (EPSM) research group. Coordinates Örebro University's elite sports-friendly university (EVL) program under the Swedish Sports Federation.
Additional Roles: Board member of RF-SISU/Örebro and active endurance athlete. Engages in public health initiatives like bicycle commuting studies and older adult physical activity interventions.
Labs & Teams: Contributes to translational research bridging lab-based physiology (e.g., electrical muscle stimulation models) and real-world applications in sports medicine and public health.
