Matthieu Honegger is a Full Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Neuchâtel, affiliated with the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology and Ancient Sciences. He has directed the Swiss archaeological mission in Kerma, Sudan, since 2002.
His academic credentials include:

With three decades of fieldwork in Switzerland and Sudan, Professor Honegger specializes in Holocene archaeology. His research centers on land occupation dynamics, funerary practices, and the evolution of social complexity toward state formation. Geographically, his expertise spans Nubia (Sudan) and regional Swiss contexts including lake stations and high-altitude settlements.
He leads the Swiss archaeological mission in Kerma, conducting excavations and research in Sudan since 2002, with significant contributions to understanding pre- and protohistory of Nubia through material culture analysis.
