Matthieu Berthomier is a CNRS Research Fellow affiliated with the Space Plasmas team at the Plasma Physics Laboratory (LPP), hosted by École Polytechnique. His research focuses on particle acceleration, turbulence, and radiation phenomena in magnetized plasmas, particularly within Earth's auroral magnetosphere. He proposed a novel space mission concept to ESA involving two satellites measuring auroral acceleration regions, now under study by NASA's EXPLORER program.
He develops advanced particle detectors for space missions, including the Solar Wind Analyzer (SWA-EAS) instrument on the Solar Orbiter mission and a hemispherical field-of-view optics system tested on the ICI-4 rocket in 2013. His work bridges theoretical plasma physics with practical instrumentation for planetary and space environment studies.
He has supervised thesis students such as Xavier Morel (UPMC, 2012) and Amine Rhouni (UPMC, 2012), focusing on electrostatic optics and ASIC technology for space plasma instruments.
