Matthias Wittmann is a Lecturer at the Institute for Film, Theatre, Media and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He is also a media theorist, writer, critic, and curator, specializing in transcultural media aesthetics, Iranian cinema, and postcolonial media theory.

His research explores media memory cultures, screenology, and body politics, with a focus on Iranian cinema. He is currently writing a habilitation thesis on 'Media Martyrographies – A Transcultural Approach.'
Key scientific awards include the 2016 Karsten Witte Prize for Film Studies and the 2023 Büchergilde Gutenberg Audience Award for 'Oktopia.'
