Matthias Weller

Professor Dr. Matthias Weller, Mag.rer.publ., holds the Alfreid Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Chair for Civil Law, Art and Cultural Property Law at the University of Bonn. He serves as Director of the Institute for German and International Civil Procedural Law and is a founding member of the Bonn Center for Reconciliation Studies (2022). His academic journey includes a Joseph Story Fellowship at Harvard Law School (1998-1999), Senior Research Fellow at Heidelberg University (2004-2012), and Chair at EBS Law School (2012-2018) where he was Vice Dean (2014-2018).

Weller's research focuses on Civil Procedural Law, Art and Cultural Property Protection, and Transnational Commercial Law. He has published over 200 works and delivered nearly 100 presentations on these topics. His recent projects include the Restatement of Restitution Rules for Nazi-Confiscated Art as a Fellow of the Käte Hamburger Center (2021-2022) and co-hosting the 2023 international conference on the HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention with the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH.

His recent publications address international legal frameworks like the HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention and Mutual Trust principles in regional integration contexts. Weller has repeatedly contributed to the Hague Academy of International Law's programs, including Advanced Courses in Hong Kong (2023, 2024).
