Matthias Stangl is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, with joint appointments in Psychological & Brain Sciences, Neurosurgery, and multiple research centers. His primary affiliation is the College of Engineering, and he leads the Stangl Lab. He holds a PhD from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA.
His research focuses on neural mechanisms underlying spatial navigation, memory, and age-related cognitive impairments. Methodologies include invasive electrophysiology (intracranial EEG, single-neuron recordings) and non-invasive techniques (fMRI, EEG) to study brain function in real-world and laboratory settings. Key research themes include Alzheimer’s disease risk prediction, closed-loop neuromodulation, and neurotechnology development.
