Prof. Dr. Matthias Richter is a University Professor and Chair of Social Determinants of Health at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Medicine and Health and the Department of Health and Sport Sciences. His academic career includes directorships at the Institute of Medical Sociology at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (2011–2022) and roles as an assistant professor at the University of Bern. He holds a habilitation (2009) and a sociology doctorate (2004) from Bielefeld University.
His research focuses on social determinants of health, social epidemiology, child/adolescent health, and prevention strategies. He combines quantitative and qualitative methods, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue between social sciences and clinical research.
Richter has published over 280 peer-reviewed articles and books, with a H-index of 50 (total) and 37 (since 2017). Notable works include Sociology of Health and Illness: A Textbook (2016) and studies on health inequalities in adolescence using the HBSC Family Affluence Scale. His awards include the 2012 Most Cited Article Award in Social Science & Medicine and the 2006 Young Researcher Award from the German Society for Medical Sociology.
Key research projects include CASDoH (Child and Adolescent Social Determinants of Health), Onco:cide (cancer patient information needs), and KontextSucht (substance abuse interventions for families). He leads the WHO Collaborating Centre for Child and Adolescent Health Promotion and directs the Social Determinants of Health research group, focusing on equity, prevention, and health literacy.
