Prof. Dr. Matthias Mahlmann is a full professor at the University of Zurich, holding the Chair of Philosophy and Theory of Law, Sociology of Law, and International Public Law within the Faculty of Law. He has held recurrent visiting professorships at institutions such as the Central European University (2005–2022), Hebrew University (2007, 2016), Georgetown University Law Center (2012), and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law (2017). He was also a Fellow at Mansfield College, University of Oxford (2021–2022). His research focuses on International Public Law, Practical Philosophy, Sociological Perspectives on Law, and Cognitive Sciences and Law. He advises national and international public institutions and has published extensively on human rights theory, legal philosophy, and interdisciplinary legal studies.
Key works include Mind and Rights (2024), exploring the intersections of human rights with ethics, law, and psychology; the textbook Rechtsphilosophie und Rechtstheorie (8th ed., 2024); and Konkrete Gerechtigkeit (7th ed., 2024), an introduction to contemporary legal theory. Recent articles address climate law, democratic resilience in crises, and legal responses to genomic editing. His lectures and symposia span global institutions, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Sao Paulo, and the National Law School of India.
His team includes senior assistants like Dr. Elif Askin and researchers such as PD Dr. Roberto Andorno. Current projects involve debates on dignity, anti-democratic ideologies, and the philosophical foundations of human rights. He actively engages in public discourse through podcasts, interviews, and legal opinions on topical issues like genome editing regulations and civil disobedience.
