Matthias Kirsch is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine, Université de Lausanne (UNIL), and Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) since August 2022. His career bridges clinical expertise in adult cardiac surgery with innovative research in advanced heart failure treatments.
Research interests focus on end-stage heart failure management through heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory assistance (e.g., HeartMate 3 devices), thoracic aortic pathologies within the Center for Rare Vascular Malformations, and ECMO applications for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and critical care. He emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches and institutional collaborations.
As of 2022, the CHUV cardiac surgery department under his leadership performs ~900 annual operations (600 with cardiopulmonary bypass), maintaining its status as Switzerland's largest heart transplant center (22 transplants in 2018). He drives institutional projects to integrate adult and pediatric cardiac care within the 2017-established Heart and Vessels Department at CHUV.
