Matthias Jacobs

Prof. Dr. Matthias Jacobs is a full Professor of Civil Law, Labor Law, and Civil Procedure Law at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. He has held this chair since April 1, 2005, after declining offers from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2007) and Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (2011). Previously, he served as Vice President of Bucerius Law School from October 2015 to September 2016 and currently holds the position of Vice President of the German Association of Labor Courts (DArbGV) since October 2020.

• Studied law at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (First State Exam 1992, Second State Exam 1996)
• Research assistant at Mainz (1993-1999) and Prof. Horst Konzen's chair (1999-2004)
• Managed the 'School of German Law' in Kraków (1997-2003) and co-directed a European graduate program (2002-2003)

Research & Leadership: Specializes in German/European labor law (particularly collective labor law) and civil procedural law. Organizes comparative law conferences with Japan and the University of Hamburg since 2017. Serves on editorial boards of Zeitschrift für Arbeitsrecht (ZfA), Neue Zeitschrift für Arbeitsrecht (NZA), and other labor law publications. Holds a venia legendi (habilitation) in 2004 for work on 'Der Gegenstand des Feststellungsverfahrens'.

Advising & Grants: Mentored over 30 PhD candidates. His chair collaborates with institutions like the German-Japanese Society for Labor Law (DJGA), Hamburger Verein für Arbeitsrecht e.V., and EIAS - European and International Labor and Social Law. He is a Trust Professor for the Stiftung der deutschen Wirtschaft (Hamburg regional group) since March 2015.

Recent Activities: Delivered lectures on pandemic impacts on labor law during a 2023 symposium in Tokyo. Organized annual events like the ZAAR (Center for Labor Relations and Labor Law) conference since 2010 and EIAS seminars on European labor law. Engaged in constitutional complaints (e.g., Art. 3 GG challenge) and European Court of Justice cases.
