Prof. Dr. Matthias Hardt is the Department Head of "People and the Environment" at the Leibniz Institute for the History of Society (GWZO) and Honorary Professor for Early History and Archaeology of Central Europe at the University of Leipzig. His academic career includes teaching roles at Humboldt University Berlin (1993–2000) and the University of Leipzig (since 2000), as well as research positions at Philipps University Marburg and the GWZO. He holds a doctorate from Philipps University Marburg (1999) with a dissertation on early medieval royal treasures.

Research Interests

Current projects explore the socio-ecological impacts of land expansion and mobility in medieval East Central Europe.
