Professor Matthias Casper is a distinguished legal scholar at the University of Münster, holding the Chair for Civil Law, Corporate, Banking and Capital Markets Law. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2020 to 2022, following his tenure as Vice Dean from 2018 to 2020. Currently, he directs the Institute for Corporate and Capital Markets Law (since 2010) and has held various leadership positions at the university, including Director of the Institute for Employment, Social and Economic Law (2003-2009). His extensive academic career spans over two decades at the University of Münster, with previous research experience at the University of Heidelberg.
Professor Casper's research focuses on capital markets law, company law, and law and finance, with particular expertise in Islamic finance and speculation. His work explores the intersection of religious diversity and legal-political unity, having led significant research projects including 'Speculation, Contract and Religion' (Project B3-8) and 'Religious Influences on Commercial Law' (Project A2-3, until 2018). Professor Casper maintains significant external engagement through his membership on the Advisory Board of the German Loan Market Association (since 2018), the Advisory Group for Financial Markets Regulation at the Federal Ministry of Finance (since 2013), and as a liaison lecturer for the German National Academic Foundation (since 2012). He serves as co-editor for several prominent legal journals including the Journal of Banking Law and Banking (ZBB/JBB) and the German Law Journal, reflecting his standing in the legal academic community.
His teaching portfolio includes courses on capital markets law, corporate law, banking law, and property law, demonstrating his comprehensive expertise across multiple legal domains.
