Matthias Ballestrem

Matthias Ballestrem is Professor of Fundamentals of Architecture at TU Dortmund University's Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. His work centers on design-based research and experimental approaches to spatial perception, complexity, and neurourbanism - studying how urban environments affect human brain function and behavior.

Previously, he headed the Bauhaus Earth Fellowship Program (2022-2024) and served as Professor of Architecture and Experimental Design at HCU Hamburg (2017-2022). Ballestrem was a Villa Massimo fellow in Rome and guest professor at Cornell University. He holds a doctorate from TU Berlin and practiced architecture at Barkow Leibinger.
