Dr. Matthew Y. Emerson serves as Co-Provost, Dean of Theology, Arts and Humanities, and Professor of Religion at Oklahoma Baptist University, holding the Floyd K. Clark Chair of Christian Leadership. He joined OBU in 2015 after previously chairing the Arts and Sciences Department at California Baptist University.

Dr. Emerson's research focuses on the Old Testament’s use in the New Testament, early Christian interpretation, and theological method, emphasizing canonical approaches to biblical theology and the integration of historical theology into contemporary Christian practice.
His 20+ publications demonstrate consistent engagement with biblical unity and theological interpretation, particularly in works like "He Descended to the Dead" (2019) on Christology and Holy Saturday, and "The Story of Scripture" (2017) on biblical narrative, reflecting interdisciplinary work spanning patristics, hermeneutics, and systematic theology.
Dr. Emerson holds the Floyd K. Clark Chair of Christian Leadership and serves as co-Executive Director of the Center for Baptist Renewal.
He advises through leadership roles as co-editor of the Journal of Baptist Studies and steering committee member of the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar, with affiliations including the Center of Ancient Christian Studies and scholarly societies like the Evangelical Theological Society and Society of Biblical Literature.
Dr. Emerson actively participates in the Center for Baptist Renewal, Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar, and Center of Ancient Christian Studies, fostering collaborative research in Baptist studies, patristics, and biblical interpretation methodologies.
