Matthew White is a Senior Lecturer in Photography/Documentary Photography at the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries, University of South Wales, and a member of the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Group. He is also Programme Leader for the Moving Image at the Open College of the Arts and affiliated with Spike Island Studios. His work bridges academic practice and contemporary art, with exhibitions across the UK, Europe, and North America.
His educational background includes a BA (Hons, 1st) in Fine Art from Kingston University and an MA in Fine Art from the University of Wales, Cardiff. He has been teaching since 1995 at institutions including Kingston University, Chelsea School of Art, and Oxford Brookes University.
White's research explores the intersection of personal and moral conflicts within socio-political landscapes, often through experimental processes involving identity, place, and performance. His work investigates how individuals construct identity in specific social contexts, using lens-based media as a core methodology. Projects have included recreating states of mind, exploring hypnosis, and inhabiting the persona of a professional actor.
His recent artistic outputs show a strong trend toward transdisciplinary, community-engaged practice, often blurring boundaries between reality and fiction. Themes include identity transformation, socio-political commentary, and the role of art in community regeneration, particularly evident in his residency with Arts & Minds and Tai Calon Housing Association.

He has been involved in extensive public engagement activities, including festivals, exhibitions, and community consultations in Ebbw Vale. His research is supported through residencies and institutional affiliations rather than traditional grants.
He has been artist-in-residence at various locations, including Newtown (Ebbw Vale), Istanbul, and Heathrow Airport, and is actively involved in Spike Island Open Studios. His practice integrates academic research with public art and community-based projects, forming a cohesive body of work that challenges conventional documentary forms.
