Matthew Weisenberger, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Kentucky (UK) and Associate Director of the Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER). He leads the Materials Technologies Research Group at CAER, which focuses on advanced materials for energy and defense applications. His roles include leadership in the U.S. Manufacturing USA initiative, serving as Kentucky Director for IACMI (Advanced Composites Innovation) and AFFOA (Functional Fabrics of America).
Education:
- Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Georgetown College
- MS and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Kentucky
Research Focus: Dr. Weisenberger’s work emphasizes carbon fiber manufacturing, thermal management in composites, nano-carbon energy applications, polymer coatings, and industrial carbon utilization. His group innovates low-cost carbon fiber for automotive use and coal-to-carbon fiber conversion. Notably, they develop cementitious materials from coal by-products using low-energy processes.
Funding & Grants: Since 2012, he has secured over $10 million across 30 projects, funded by DOE, DOD, NSF, Kentucky state, and industry. His work aligns with national priorities in advanced manufacturing and energy.
Affiliations & Leadership:
- U.S. Manufacturing USA Initiative
- KY Director for IACMI and AFFOA
- American Carbon Society Executive Committee (2010–present)
Innovation: Holds two U.S. patents, authored three book chapters, and has over 1,000 peer citations. His research drives global advancements in carbon fiber and sustainable materials.
