Rodney Andrews serves as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky's Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering with a joint appointment in Mechanical Engineering. He concurrently holds leadership roles as Director of the Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) since 2007 and Interim Director of the Kentucky-Argonne Battery Manufacturing R&D Center since 2009.
His academic foundation includes advanced degrees in Chemical Engineering:
- Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, University of Kentucky, 1999
- B.S., Chemical Engineering, Michigan State University, 1994
Dr. Andrews' research program focuses on advanced carbon-based materials science, specializing in activated carbon production, carbon fiber synthesis from novel precursors, and pitch chemistry characterization. His work bridges environmental remediation, sustainable agricultural applications, and next-generation energy storage systems through material innovation.
Under his directorship, CAER has evolved into a national hub for energy research, particularly in battery manufacturing technologies through the Kentucky-Argonne collaboration. His leadership spans research management, facility oversight, and strategic development of carbon-materials initiatives addressing critical energy challenges.
