Matthew Waxman is the Liviu Librescu Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and faculty chair of the National Security Law Program. He is also co-chair of the Cybersecurity Center at the Columbia Data Science Institute and an Affiliated Member of the Cybersecurity program. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he serves as Adjunct Senior Fellow for Law and Foreign Policy.
Waxman's research and expertise focus on national security law, international law, constitutional law, and the legal dimensions of military force, terrorism, and emerging technologies. His work sits at the intersection of law, policy, and international relations, with a particular emphasis on executive authority and human rights in times of conflict.
His professional recognition includes being named a Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom, where he studied international relations and military history. His government service in the State Department, Department of Defense, and National Security Council informs his scholarly and policy-oriented contributions.
