Matthew Tropp is a Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School and currently serves as the Director of Housing for the Housing Justice Unit – Tenant Defense in the Bronx Neighborhood Office of The Legal Aid Society. He oversees a staff of over 75 people and has extensive experience in housing court litigation.
- Education: J.D. from New York Law School (2006), B.S. in Business Administration (Accounting focus) from the University of Arizona (with honors)
Professional Roles: He joined The Legal Aid Society in 2006 as a Staff Attorney in the Bronx, later became Supervising Attorney in Queens (2014-2015) and the Bronx (2015-2019), and has been Director of Housing since April 2019. He has trained on topics like non-payment proceedings, holdover cases, and FHEPS matters.
- Research Focus: Housing justice, tenant defense strategies, and the right to counsel in housing court
- Teaching: Courses on Housing Justice: The Right to Counsel in Housing Court (Fall 2023-2025)
Practice Areas: Representation of tenants in Housing Court non-payment, holdover, and HP proceedings, as well as Supreme Court and administrative forums.
