University of Glasgowمعرفی
Dr. Matthew Sinton is an Affiliate Researcher at the University of Glasgow's School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where he developed a human pluripotent stem cell model for studying non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). His research focuses on immunometabolism, host-parasite interactions (e.g., Trypanosoma brucei), and the role of sex hormones in liver function. He has explored adipose tissue dynamics during infections and mitochondrial metabolic adaptations in NAFLD.
Dr. Sinton co-founded The STEM Village, an organization promoting LGBTQ+ visibility in STEM. This initiative led to a globally endorsed symposium and an immunology seminar series. His work bridges scientific research with advocacy, emphasizing equity in academia.
Grants:
- Characterising the metabolic response of brown adipocytes to infection with Influenza A virus (Society for Endocrinology, 2022–2022)
- Defining the host metabolic response to infection with Trypanosoma brucei (Society for Endocrinology, 2022–2022)
- Understanding immunological control of adipose tissue function in Human African Trypanosomiasis (Wellcome Trust, 2021–2022)
Research Highlights:
- Discovered metabolic shunts (e.g., purine nucleotide cycle) compensating for TCA cycle deficits in NAFLD.
- Investigated γδ T cell roles in skin inflammation and adipose wasting during Trypanosoma brucei infections.
- Linked sex hormones to liver disease progression through epigenetic mechanisms.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the School of Biodiversity’s Graham Kerr Building, collaborating on host-pathogen and immunometabolic studies.
