Juan Quintana is a Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Wellcome Fellow at the University of Manchester, working in the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. His research focuses on parasitology, neuroimmunology, and host-pathogen interactions, particularly studying Trypanosoma brucei (sleeping sickness) and its effects on immune responses and host tissues. He holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Edinburgh (2017), an MRes from the Universidad de Zaragoza (2009), and a BSc in Biology from the Universidad de Carabobo (2007).
Key areas of expertise include neuroimmunology, barrier tissues, adipose-derived stem cells, and organoid modeling. His work bridges parasitology with neuroinflammation and metabolic pathways, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and infectious diseases.
Recent research highlights include studies on IL-17 signaling in adipose tissue dynamics, the role of γδ T cells in inflammation, and brain organoid models to study Trypanosoma interactions. He has received prestigious awards such as the British Society for Parasitology Medal (2024) and the Wellcome Career Development Award (2025).
Quintana also engages in editorial roles (e.g., PLoS Biology) and hosts academic visitors, fostering collaborative research networks. His lab investigates the intersection of parasitology with neuroimmunology, metabolism, and behavior, aiming to uncover novel therapeutic targets for neglected tropical diseases.
