Matthew Shipe

Matthew Shipe is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Washington University in St. Louis, where he co-directs the Advanced Writing program. He earned his PhD and MA from Washington University and a BA from Rhodes College. Shipe is a leading scholar in post-1945 American literature, specializing in Jewish American identity, male sexuality, and cultural shifts in late 20th-century fiction.

Shipe's research spans American culture studies, film and media studies, and religious thought. His publications focus on the works of Philip Roth, John Updike, and Don DeLillo, emphasizing late style, historical context, and political themes. He has served as President of the Philip Roth Society and is on the editorial board of Philip Roth Studies.

In addition to his research, Shipe teaches courses such as The Art of the Novel, Golden Age of Children’s Literature, and End of the Century: American Culture during the 1990s, bridging literary analysis with cultural and media studies.
