Dr Matthew Sharp is a Lecturer in New Testament Studies at the University of St Andrews' School of Divinity. His research focuses on early Christian conceptions of divinity within Graeco-Roman religious and philosophical contexts. He holds a Leverhulme Trust-funded project exploring divinity and materiality in the New Testament. Recent work includes examining Pauline epistolary contexts and ancient divination practices.
Research Interests: Early Christian theology, Graeco-Roman religion, ancient divination, divine corporeality, Pauline epistles, and comparative methodology.
Awards:
- Manfred Lautenschläger Award for Theological Promise (2023)
Advising & Grants: Supervises three PhD students (Junbo Cao, Josh Johnson, Mattie E. Motl). Recipient of Leverhulme Trust funding for The Stuff that Gods are Made Of (2021–2024).
Labs/Teams: Engaged in interdisciplinary research through the School of Divinity, collaborating on projects like Gods in and Outside the Cosmos conference (2023).
