Peter Oakes is the Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester's Department of Religions & Theology. He specializes in New Testament studies, particularly Galatians, Romans, and Philippians, with a focus on Graeco-Roman social contexts. His research integrates archaeology, social sciences, and biblical interpretation. Oakes co-supervises PhD students across disciplines, including Classics and Jewish Studies, and actively participates in interdisciplinary seminars like the Ehrhardt Biblical Studies Research Seminar and Classics research groups.

Research Interests:
His work explores Pauline epistles within Roman imperial contexts, archaeology of Pompeii and Philippi, and the social dynamics of early Christian communities. Current projects include a commentary on Philippians for the New International Greek Testament Commentary series and collaborative work on Coptic manuscripts with the John Rylands Research Institute.
Advising & Grants:
Oakes has supervised numerous PhDs on topics ranging from Pauline Christology to early Christian women in Ephesus. Recent projects include a pilot study on Rylands Coptic manuscripts' community impacts and contributions to the Judaism and Rome ERC project. He is involved in academic committees for the British New Testament Society and the Context Group for Biblical Research.
