Matthew Shafer

Matthew Shafer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University. His research combines intellectual history and social theory to examine how core political concepts evolve through historical debates.

Current research investigates:

• Historical development of 'violence' as a political concept
• Marxist theories of technology and nature
• Critical theory approaches to language and power

Shafer's publications analyze thinkers from Engels to contemporary theorists, exploring intersections of technology, language, and social power. His methodological work examines challenges in qualitative social inquiry.
