Julie Shafer is an Associate Professor of Art at Chapman University's Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, where she teaches conceptual photography and visual arts. Her academic journey includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California.
Shafer's research focuses on recontextualizing histories through photographic documentation, with particular emphasis on American violence against marginalized communities, environmental impacts of industrialization, and historical erasure. Her conceptual approach investigates trauma, memory, and social justice through innovative photographic techniques that document hate crimes, environmental degradation, and cultural landscapes.
Her recent work demonstrates consistent engagement with pressing social issues through visual documentation. The artist frequently employs long-exposure techniques and site-specific installations to create powerful visual narratives about historical trauma and contemporary social issues, particularly focusing on LGBTQ+ experiences and environmental justice. Her work bridges artistic practice with scholarly research on American violence and historical memory.
