Matthew Salzano is an IDEA Fellow in Ethical AI, Information Systems, and Data Science & Literacy at Stony Brook University. He holds a joint appointment between the School of Communication and Journalism (SoCJ)/Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR). His research focuses on digital culture, social justice, and participatory practices in deliberation, argumentation, and protest. Salzano earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in communication from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in communication and women’s and gender studies from Pacific Lutheran University.
His teaching emphasizes critical engagement with media and rhetoric, often incorporating digital humanities projects like Twitter bot creation and digital archiving. He is committed to fostering inclusive, respectful dialogue in diverse academic environments. Awards include recognition from the Association for the Rhetoric of Science, Technology, and Medicine and the National Communication Association.
