Ryan Calvey is a Senior Lecturer at Stony Brook University’s Program in Writing & Rhetoric (PWR), where he has taught since Fall 2022. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Stony Brook (2011), with a dissertation exploring literary fantasy and science fiction as theological speculation, along with an M.A. in English (2002) and a B.A. in English with a psychology minor (2000) from Dowling College. His teaching focuses on composition, rhetoric, and interdisciplinary courses examining pop culture, gaming, and speculative fiction.
Calvey’s research interests bridge literary analysis and pedagogy, emphasizing how genres like science fiction and fantasy engage with contemporary ethical, spiritual, and social issues. He has designed courses such as Writing about Gaming and The Rhetoric of the Future, blending critical thinking with practical writing skills. His service includes roles as PWR Faculty Liaison, mentor, and committee member, contributing to curriculum development and assessment initiatives.
He has presented at academic conferences, including a keynote on literary escapism and sessions on teaching composition. Awards include the CELT Online Teaching Badge and recognition for teaching excellence. Calvey’s work extends to tutoring roles at multiple institutions and collaboration with departments like History to improve student writing.
