Matthew Redinbo is a Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics, and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He directs the Structural Biology program and is a member of the Program in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, as well as the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- PhD, University of California, Los Angeles
His research focuses on the structural and functional basis of cellular processes, particularly drug discovery and the gut microbiome's role in human health. Key projects include developing drugs to improve cancer chemotherapy, understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and studying DNA processing and protein function during disease.
Recent publications highlight his work on microbial enzymes like β-glucuronidases, bile salt hydrolases, and sulfatases, which impact drug metabolism, colitis, and cancer treatment. His lab integrates structural biology, chemical biology, and metagenomics to address these challenges.
- UNC Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2019)
- UNC Research Outstanding Mentor Award (2018)
- Fellow, AAAS (2013)
- Burroughs Wellcome Career Award (1999)
Redinbo's lab, located in Genome Sciences 4350, accepts students and employs techniques such as X-ray crystallography, activity-based proteomics, and molecular modeling to study host-microbial interactions.
