Matthew P Unger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University, Montreal. His research intersects socio-legal studies, sound studies, and cultural theory. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Alberta and has conducted postdoctoral research there. His work focuses on legal beginnings through settler colonialism, biopolitics, and new materialism; sound and music subcultures; and the symbolic dynamics of extreme metal. He co-leads the Transgressive Sounds and Atmospheres initiative and has been supported by SSHRC and FRQ-SC grants.

Research Interests: His dual focus includes:
1) Socio-Legal Studies: colonial legal imaginaries, criminal accusation, and legal phenomenology.
2) Sound Studies: extreme metal subcultures, sonic atmospheres, and music’s role in constructing identity and meaning. He employs hermeneutic and phenomenological methods to explore how symbols shape social and legal judgments.
Recent Article Trends: Recent work emphasizes colonial legal structures, environmental jurisprudence, and the interplay between sound/music and transgressive cultural practices. His scholarship bridges Continental philosophy, critical legal theory, and ethnographic research.
