Her work focuses on underground music scenes like UK garage and funky, analyzing how Black British women negotiate authenticity, creative autonomy, and institutional barriers. Through ethnographic methodology and sonic analysis, she investigates embodied cultural practices, spirituality in music, and systemic colorism in British music industries.
Recent publications demonstrate expertise in subcultural evolution, gendered sonic dynamics, and historiography of Afrodiasporic music. Her edited volume with Liverpool University Press, Black Music in Britain in the 21st Century (2023), establishes frameworks for digital music studies and post-internet cultural analysis. As a methodologist, she developed MDA (Musical Discourse Analysis) for social science music research.
Current teaching includes research methods, subcultures, and black music studies. While no formal awards are listed, her work documents misogynoir and institutional racism in UK music industries through interviews with artists like Mis-Teeq and Ms. Dynamite.
