Matthew Navarro is a Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia (UWA), School of Biological Sciences, coordinating a research group integrating environmental economics, social science, and ecology to address marine management challenges. He holds a BSc (Marine Science) with First Class Honours and a PhD from UWA. His research focuses on applied marine management, including impacts of port developments, marine park surveys, offshore wind energy monitoring, and sustainable fishing practices. He collaborates with Traditional Owners and organizations like Parks Australia and the National Environmental Sciences Program's Marine and Coastal Hub.
Teaching includes unit coordination for Frontiers in Biology (550+ students) and Fisheries Management and Conservation at the master’s level. He supervises 9 PhD students and has guided 8 honours/masters students to completion. Over 27 grants funded projects on marine policy, social-economic benchmarks for offshore wind energy, and adaptive management of marine parks.
Research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, including choice experiments, bioeconomic modeling, and integrating local ecological knowledge. Key collaborations include the UWA Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy, Australian Marine Social Sciences Network, and the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society.
