Matthew Myers serves as the ninth dean of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University (SMU), appointed August 1, 2017. Previously dean at Miami University's Farmer School of Business, he held the Nestlé Professorship and led the marketing and supply chain management department at the University of Tennessee. Myers earned his PhD in marketing and international business from Michigan State University and emphasizes building on institutional strengths through faculty investment and cross-campus collaboration with SMU's Lyle Engineering School, Dedman Law School, and Dedman College.
Education:
- PhD in Marketing and International Business, Michigan State University
His research explores global business systems, with deep expertise in knowledge-sharing within cross-border relationships, international pricing strategies, and supply chain-driven wealth distribution in economies. Myers analyzes how events like the fall of the Berlin Wall, NAFTA implementation, and post-independence developments in Sub-Saharan Africa shape comparative marketing systems. He asserts that business education must transcend geographical orientation to address macro-level global economic challenges, particularly in developing economies and Latin America.
Scientific Awards:
- Three-time Outstanding Faculty Member for MBA Programs
- Chancellor’s Award for Globalization Initiatives
Myers leverages extensive consulting experience with global firms across distribution, chemicals, insurance, pharmaceuticals, and marketing research to inform executive education. He launched Miami University's global executive MBA program with ESSEC Business School and Central European University, funded by corporate/private donations. At SMU Cox, he prioritizes modernizing curriculum to develop leadership skills for rapidly evolving sectors like business analytics, responding to corporate demand for '4+1' education models and flattened organizational hierarchies requiring earlier leadership development.
Labs and teams include the Center for Analytics & Data Science he established at Miami University through partnerships with Engineering and Creative Arts colleges. At SMU, Myers plans to expand similar cross-disciplinary initiatives, particularly targeting Dallas-Fort Worth's startup ecosystem and Latin American connections. He advocates for symbiotic university-city relationships, noting that world-class business schools are essential for world-class cities and vice versa.
