Dr Matthew McLean is a Lecturer and Researcher in the School of History at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on late Renaissance and early Reformation scholarly culture, particularly humanist networks in Reformed Basel, cosmography, Bible scholarship, and the intersection of religion, science, and traditional knowledge. He teaches European intellectual and social history, with a focus on the northern Renaissance and Reformation. Dr McLean’s work includes editing volumes like International Exchange in the Early Modern Book World (2016) and Shaping the Bible in the Reformation (2012), as well as a monograph on Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia (2007).
His research trends emphasize the role of translation and biblical scholarship in Reformation-era crises, the dynamics of early modern print culture, and the interplay between humanist networks and political-religious contexts. He has supervised PhD student Sukwoo Choi and contributed to the Universal Short Title Catalogue (1450–1650) project (2012–2016), focusing on cultural translation dynamics.
Dr McLean’s academic activities include teaching, editing, and exploring the cultural and intellectual history of early modern Europe through publications and collaborative projects.
